Etsy Cracks Down on AI-Generated Products

New rules ban AI-written patterns and require at least one unedited photo for most listings, with refund risk if images break the policy.

An Etsy crochet pattern now has to prove it actually works. Sellers of patterns, recipes and other how-to guides must show a real finished item, and the instructions can no longer be written by artificial intelligence (AI).

Etsy announced the rules on October 22, 2026. A new photo rule came with them, and it reaches well beyond AI users. Most physical product listings now need at least one unedited photo of the real item against a real background.

The money risk is in the refund rules. If a listing breaks the new image rules and a buyer opens a case saying the item is very different from the listing, Etsy says the seller may have to pay the refund.

What Etsy changed

Etsy explained the changes in a Seller Handbook update and an updated Listing Image Requirements policy. Here are the main rules.

  • One untouched photo. The required image can’t be edited at all. Some product types, such as digital, customized and made-to-order items, have different rules.
  • No AI-written guides. Patterns, recipes, woodworking plans and instruction manuals must be the seller’s own work.
  • Real results. Guide listings must show something actually made from the instructions, not an AI mockup.
  • No bot listings. Etsy will remove listings that bots create without a person involved, and it may remove the whole shop.

Sellers can still edit their other photos, with or without AI, to fix lighting, crop or change backgrounds. Editing that hides flaws or changes how the item looks is not allowed.

Why Etsy acted now

Etsy says many buyers can’t tell which items involve AI. It counts that confusion among the top 3 reasons buyers don’t shop on Etsy more often. Sellers had also complained about AI crochet listings that showed designs the patterns couldn’t produce.

“AI should support our sellers’ creativity and craftsmanship, not replace them,” James Ossman, Etsy’s vice president of customer operations, wrote in the announcement.

AI art is still allowed. CNBC reports that Etsy will keep allowing it when sellers “play a clear role in what they create and are transparent about the process.”

For shop owners, the first step is checking every listing. Make sure each one has a raw photo of the real item. Take down any AI-written patterns or recipes, and photograph finished samples. Keep your original photos and files in case a buyer disputes an order.

According to Retail Dive, Etsy already flags suspected AI images when sellers upload them and is spending more on tools to find and remove problem listings. The sellers with the most work ahead are those with large digital catalogs, because every pattern now needs a real finished sample.
