Etsy sellers who list anything made with real animal fur have until August 11, 2026 to pull those products or face automatic removal and possible account suspension. That deadline, now in effect, is part of a broader policy overhaul that also tightens what counts as “handmade” on the platform.
Etsy’s updated Animal Products Policy bans all products made from or containing natural animal fur, regardless of whether the item is new or vintage. Raw pelts, finished garments, accessories, and trims from mink, fox, rabbit, coyote, and raccoon dog are all prohibited.
Taxidermy is still allowed. So are byproduct materials like leather, sheepskin, wool, shearling, cowhide, and mohair. There is also a narrow exception for Indigenous sellers registered with the Indian Arts and Crafts Board.
What pushed Etsy to act
The ban followed a 58-day campaign by the Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade that included more than 50 protests in 17 cities. Activists even disrupted CEO Kruti Patel Goyal’s live presentation at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference in March 2026.
CAFT Executive Director Suzie Stork said at the time that “Etsy’s policy sets a new standard for online retailers.”
Stricter rules for handmade sellers too
Alongside the fur ban, Etsy has sharpened enforcement of its handmade and creativity standards. From August 11, products made with computerized tools like Cricut machines, laser cutters, or 3D printers must be based on the seller’s own original design. Purchased templates, licensed clipart, and pre-made design files no longer qualify.
Sellers who rely on Creative Fabrica SVGs, Design Bundles art, or similar assets risk listing removal or full shop suspension. Some seller communities have informally called this push a “handmade certification” process, but Etsy has not launched a formal program under that name. What has changed is that Etsy’s algorithm now favors listings with original photography, process shots, and clear proof of the seller’s creative role.
For small sellers, the practical takeaway is straightforward. Audit your listings for any natural fur content and remove it. If you use computerized tools, make sure every design is genuinely yours and keep your original files as proof. Add workspace and process photos to your listings to strengthen your standing in search results.
Vintage fur sellers will need to pivot entirely, potentially shifting to faux fur or other permitted materials. FashionUnited reported that thousands of existing fur listings were already flagged for removal as of April 2026.
With enforcement now live, sellers who haven’t adjusted should treat this as urgent. Etsy has signaled it will continue tightening standards around originality and authenticity heading into the holiday selling season.
